The San Francisco SPCA launched the animal assisted therapy program in 1981, sending pets into hospitals, assisted living centers and other locations. Today, there are about 170 handler/pet teams that do 200 visits every month — including 191 dogs, seven cats and two bunnies — with school sites now on the list
